Leinster GAA Series Update – Monday 30th Jan 2012

Wait continues for Kildare and DCU in Bord na Móna O’Byrne Cup as Laois take shield honours while hurling action continues.

The Bord na Móna O’Byrne Cup Final between Kildare and DCU failed to take place on Sunday owing to a waterlogged pitch at St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge.

The decider between the reigning Bord na Móna O’Byrne Cup champions and 2010 winners was postponed on Sunday morning following the inclement weather and will now take place on Friday February 17th at 7.30pm in O’Moore Park, Portlaoise.

Despite the postponement there was plenty of action to whet the appetite across the province with Laois crowned O’Byrne Shield champions for the third time.

David Conway scored six points at Wexford Park as visitors Laois claimed a 1-15 to 1-6 win over the hosts.

An early goal from Paul Cahillane paved the way for a Laois victory, with Justin McNulty’s side leading by 1-5 to 0-2 after 25 minutes.
Wexford rallied with a Paddy Byrne goal, but Laois looked good with Conway among those impressive as they held a 1-9 to 1-3 interval lead.
Ben Brosnan tried hard for Wexford, but Laois always were in command, with Kevin Meaney accepting the Shield after the game.

Bord na Móna Walsh Cup
Galway, Laois and Kilkenny claimed victories in the Bord na Mona Walsh Cup quarter-finals on Sunday afternoon.

Galway were always comfortable as they cruised to a 6-25 to 1-8 victory over UCD at Belfield.

Anthony Cunningham’s debut game as the Tribesmen boss saw nine different scorers for his side with debutant Conor Cooney (2-6) leading the charge.

11 of last year’s Championship side saw action for the visitors in a game which also saw Galway panellist Jamie Ryan commanding the goals for the students.

Ryan pulled off two brilliant saves in the opening half including two from Damien Hayes and one from Joe Canning, but leaked four first half goals.

Cooney, Canning, Damien Hayes and David Burke all raising green flags before the interval.

Iarla Tannian’s goal placed Galway 5-20 to 0-7 ahead five minutes after the restart.

Cooney added his second goal late on, with UCD captain Noel McGrath (1-2) of Tipperary registering the students lone goal in this game.

Galway will face Laois in the semi-finals after goals in either half from Tommy Fitzgerald were key in their 2-14 to 1-14 win over Dublin at a wet O’Moore Park, Portlaoise.

The sides were level on four occasions inside the opening 24 minutes, before Laois stole a march before the break.

The hosts led by 1-8 to 0-6 at the interval with Fitzgerald claiming a 32nd minute goal and the Portlaoise clubman netted Laois’s second goal 30 seconds after the restart.

The O’Moore’s opened up a nine-point lead following a John Brophy score soon-after, but Anthony Daly’s charges responded well with six points in a row

Shane Stapleton, Cian McBride, Declan O’Dwyer, Ryan O’Dwyer and John McCaffrey were all on target to leave the score at 2-9 to 0-12 in the 47th minute.

Laois bounced back with a trio of points, but a goal from substitute Alan McCrabbe left just three points between the sides with eight minutes left on the clock.

The sides traded points late on, with Dublin placing strong pressure on the Laois defence, but Teddy McCarthy’s side stood firm to hold out for victory.

An experimental Kilkenny edged the students of NUI Galway by 0-13 to 0-12 at Freshford this afternoon.

Managed by Under 21 manager Richie Mulrooney the hosts were pushed all the way by the Fitzgibbon Cup contenders.

Caimin Morey was among those on target for the students in the opening half, as they held a slender 0-8 to 0-7 interval lead.

John Power was among those who impressed for Kilkenny, who now face Westmeath in the last four next weekend.

Bord na Móna Walsh Shield

Offaly and DIT will contest the Bord na Mona Walsh Shield final next Sunday at O’Connor Park, Tullamore after semi-final victories over Wexford and Carlow respectively on Sunday.

Ollie Baker’s charges were impressive as they claimed a 2-18 to 1-15 win at Wexford Park.

Joe Bergin scored 1-8 for the eventual winners who began this game strongly thanks to an early goal from Derek Molloy (1-2).

Molloy’s goal and some good scores from Sean Ryan and Bergin helped Offaly take a 1-8 to 0-2 lead after 20 minutes.

Wexford outscored Offaly by 0-5 to 0-4 in the closing 15 minutes of the half, but the visitors led by 1-12 to 0-7 at the interval.

The hosts scored 1-3 without reply including a Danny Carroll goal early after the restart, but Bergin’s goal placed Offaly in the driving seat once more and they never looked back.

The Midlanders will face DIT in the decider after a Niall Quinn goal provided the difference as the students accounted for Carlow by 1-15 to 0-15 at Dr Cullen Park.

Quinn’s goal arrived just before half-time after DIT goalkeeper Finn McGarry had made a save for the students at the opposite end.

Not more than four points separated the sides on the restart, with Carlow edging their way back into contention late on, but Marty McKenna’s charges held out for victory

Bord na Móna Kehoe Cup
Meath prevented a quartet of college sides advancing to the Bord Na Mona Kehoe Cup semi-finals, with St Pat’s, Drumcondra, Trinity College and GMIT also victorious, while Fingal were winners in the Kehoe Shield.

At Eire Og, Greystones, goals were key as St Patrick’s Drumcondra as claimed a 3-11 to 2-9 win over Wicklow.

Kilkenny’s Canice Maher netted two goals for the students – one in either half, with the Drumcondra side leading 1-7 to 0-7 at the interval.

Lorcan French claimed the visitors other second half goal.

Eight players were on target for Meath as they claimed a 1-17 to 1-9 win over DCU at Pairc Tailteann.

Nicky Horan claimed 0-7 for the hosts, with Emmet Kent scoring 1-6 for DCU.

DCU were reduced to 14-men with eight minutes remaining following the dismissal of their captain Alan Griffith.

This evening, Trinity College registered a 2-15 to 0-14 win over Down at Clan na nGael, Ringsend.

Dublin’s Conor Donegan and Meath’s Mark O’Sullivan netted the goals for Michael Hyland’s side.

The students will meet fellow college opposition in the semi-finals after GMIT claimed a hard-earned 1-17 to 1-16 win over Kildare after extra-time at St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge on Saturday.

Kildare led by 1-3 to 0-4 after 19 minutes of normal time, with Chris Bonus netting their goal.

However, just a point separated the sides at the break on a 1-7 to 1-6 scoreline, with Kenny Feeney claiming the students goal.

Kildare led by 1-11 to 1-7 with 14 minutes remaining, but saw Paul Divilly dismissed.

The students rallied with a Jason Hanrahan point forcing extra-time at 1-12 apiece.

GMIT were strongest in extra-time, with Kildare losing Paudie Reidy to a second yellow card.

Bord na Móna Kehoe Shield
In the Kehoe Shield, Fingal advanced to the decider following their 1-12 to 1-8 win over Louth at Darver on Sunday

Louth were reduced to 14 men after defender Adrian Wallace was shown his second yellow card in the 21st minute.

The hosts led early in the second half following a Brian Corcoran goal, and although they added a further points, they were held scoreless for a 17-minute spell, with JM Sheridan (0-5) and Andy Richardson (1-1) paving the way for a Fingal win.

Willie Burke’s charges will have to wait to see who they will face in the decider, after the other semi-final between Roscommon and Armagh due to take place at Athleague was called off.
