Future Use of Peatland

Cutaway peatlands present a range of complex options for future uses that must be considered on a bog by bog basis

Over the years, Bord na Móna has put significant effort into researching the best possible uses for our vast land bank totalling 80,000 hectares. These lands, located mainly in the Midlands, represent one of the company’s principle potential assets. Aside from being our assets, they are also important resources for the nation as a whole.Boora Lake

The decision to develop cutaway bog takes considerable time, effort, and planning.

Eight Key Land Use Factors

There are eight key factors we must look at when considering the use of Bord na Móna land:

  • Nature of Cutaway
  • Location and Infrastructure
  • Time frame for Peat Extraction
  • Economics
  • National and Regional Needs
  • Legislation and Regulation
  • Land Use Planning Policies
  • Local Considerations

Land Use Challenges

When considering using our land significant challenges are presented. Our land bank is fragmented with over 130 individual bogs located across the Midlands. Peatland is very different to the type of land typically found in Ireland, even when cutover or cutaway. To explain, cutover bogs are those from which the upper layers of vegetation have been removed to facilitate peat production. Cutaway bogs are areas where peat harvesting has been discontinued, usually because it is no longer economically viable to continue harvesting.

When we first began looking at uses for our land, the focus was on turning cutaway bog into a productive growing medium for agriculture, horticulture and forestry. The reality of this proved to be very complex. Extensive trials have shown that economic, as well as technical difficulties, render land use for agriculture and horticulture realistically unviable, whilst the potential for forestry is limited.

However, a number of viable uses for cutaway bogs have been outlined and include:

  • Alternative Energy – Wind
  • Alternative Energy – Biomass
  • Agriculture and Horticulture
  • Forestry
  • Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services
  • Amenity and Tourism
