The Powergen business manages and operates Bord na Móna’s existing power generation assets, which include the Edenderry peat/biomass generating unit, the Cushaling peaking plant,the Bellacorick, Mountlucas and Bruckana wind farms and the Drehid Landfill gas facility. The business also has a number of developmental projects at different stages of maturity, that will add substantially to Bord na Móna’s electricity generating capacity over the next decade.

The Role:


Our Powergen Operations Business Unit currently wish to recruit a Regulatory & Market Analyst, on a Fixed Term Contract. This role will report to the Commercial & Regulatory Affairs Manager.


The main duties and responsibilities of the role will include the following:




  • Both the market framework and regulatory regime for electricity are undergoing substantial transformation at national, regional and European levels. In the first instance it is critical that BnM PowerGen understands how these changes will impact on its overall business & commercial interests and also, where appropriate, has the ability to influence the final design of the market and the interpretation/application of the new regulations. The holder of this role will be immersed in the market/regulatory redesign process, and will be involved in preparing Bord na Móna’s formal responses to these consultative processes.
  • To participate in the SEMC’s market redesign process and the associated development of new market arrangements in terms of ancilliary services and DS3 Participation is a two way street – in the first instance, analysing, understanding, assessing and disseminating the proposed changes, and secondly, following direction from the Commercial and Regulatory Affairs Manager, proposing modifications/interpretations of the final design/regulations into a configuration which is best aligned with BnM’s commercial interests.
  • To analyse, assess and dissect wider national, regional and European energy policy from the prospective of BnM’s generation portfolio and strategic assets. To report this information and analysis to the Commercial and Regulatory Affairs Manager, in a timely manner.
  • Ensure timely and considered responses to formal consultations, to assist the Market Modelling function within BnM PowerGen, and provide regular updates to the management team of developments in the commercial/regulatory sphere. Present and deliver BnM’s position, regarding aspects of the market redesign, in a clear and concise manner to the ambit of stakeholders.
  • Build and cultivate productive relationships internally within Bord na Móna and externally with a range of stakeholders including (but not limited to) the CER, UR, Eirgrid, EAI (and its members), DCENR, DETI, DECC, OFGEM and NG UK.
  • Support the management team to ensure that all milestones of the iSEM Implementation project are met in a timely manner and that no business interruption takes place on iSEM go live date.
  • Identify commercial opportunities for forward selling of Power. Support the daily operations of the bidding and trading function of all BnM Powergen assets across the different market timeframes and across the CRM Market.
  • Support the MMU function within BnM on the analysis of current and future Market conditions, understanding the drivers for current and future energy prices.
  • All employees are expected to co-operate fully with all provisions taken by the company for ensuring Health and Safety, and Welfare of co-employees and members of the public using the premises.
  • Proactively participate in the Performance Management process to ensure delivery of own, and the wider team’s, objectives.












The Person:


The ideal candidate will possess the following qualification, skills, knowledge and attributes:




  • Honours degree in either Science, Engineering or Energy Economics/Policy a pre-requisite;
  • 5 – 10 years post qualification experience in a regulatory/regulated environment;
  • Significant experience in the wider energy industry an advantage;
  • Membership of a relevant professional body will be required;
  • Minimum 3 years expertise understanding of the regulatory system (for energy) in Ireland, UK and Europe is required; 
  • Excellent communication skills are essential for the role;
  • Ability to work within a collaborative team environment and ability to work on their own initiative;
  • Understanding of the regulatory systems (for energy) in Ireland, UK and Europe is desirable;
  • Excellent written, presentation and verbal communication skills are essential for the role;
  • High proficiency in standard IT packages an advantage;
  • Proficiency in the English language is a requirement, alongside eligibility to work in Ireland;
  • A “can do” work ethic with excellent problem solving skills;
