Our Businesses

Bord na Móna operates a diversified portfolio across six main business areas, serving markets in Ireland as well as Britain and mainland Europe.

Resource Recovery – (AES)

Resource recovery is an integrated waste management business providing collections, recovery, recycling, disposal and advanced technology treatment of waste services. The business is focused on delivering exceptional customer service and maximising the re-use potential of managed waste materials.

These services are operated under the AES brand which services both domestic and commercial customers. At present, our domestic service is only available in Leinster and North Munster, whereas our commercial waste management operates across Ireland.

Feedstock

The Feedstock business supplies peat and biomass materials for the generation of electricity in Bord na Móna’s Edenderry Power Station, and the two ESB power stations at West Offaly and Lough Ree. Feedstock also supplies key internal customers with the peat needed to manufacture peat briquettes and horticultural products. Our feedstock business focuses on the most efficient and profitable operating model in order to deliver optimum value to customers.

Power Generation

Bord na Mona’s Power Generation (Powergen) business manages and operates a portfolio of energy generating assets, including the Edenderry Power Station, the Cushaling peaking plant, and Bellacorick, Mount Lucas, and Bruckana Wind Farms. Recently, on a corporate level, we split out our Powergen business unit into two separate business units: Powergen Development and Powergen Operations.

Powergen has a number of projects under development at different stages of maturity. These will add substantially to Bord na Móna’s electricity generating capacity over the next decade. The business is focused on becoming a leading low carbon electricity generator, with a suite of resources including wind, biomass and other renewables, supported by a flexible thermal plant.

Fuels

Bord na Móna’s Fuel business has a number of popular products, the most iconic being our smokeless Peat Briquettes and Black Diamond Coal. We are the market leaders in Ireland for home heating products and see it as our responsibility to develop lower carbon home heating fuels. As part of this goal, we have developed an ambitious plan to lead the market towards a decarbonised and smokeless fuel environment.
