Peat Harvesting

Feedstock is responsible for managing, harvesting and supplying peat and biomass raw materials for a range of customers and applications.

Bord na Móna Feedstock harvests and supplies over 3 million tonnes of milled peat each year. Our customers use peat

  • as fuel to generate electricity
  • to produce growing media for flowers, ornamental plants and vegetables
  • as the raw material in the manufacture of Bord na Móna peat briquettes
  • as a source of biofibrous media used in Bord na Móna’s natural effluent treatment systems

Peat is a finite resource and we have committed not to develop and new peat production bogs. Bord na Móna Feedstock is now focused on reducing our dependency on peat and developing a more sustainable future, based on supplying renewable biomass to our customers.

Since 2008 we have been supplying biomass to Edenderry Power Station, which has already achieved 10% dilution of peat with biomass, and is on course to deliver on the Government target of 30% dilution with biomass by 2015.
