Kilcormac Community Initiatives

Kilcormac Community Resident
As a community that has existed almost solely due to the establishment of Boora Works, Kilcormac is inextricably linked with Bord na Móna and Lough Boora Discovery Park through our historical story and our key location.

Since the establishment of Lough Boora Discovery Park, the community of Kilcormac have benefited on many fronts – a national treasure on our doorstep for our community to enjoy – a tourist opportunity to help with the economy of the town and the continuation of the bond and passion that the community of Kilcormac hold for Lough Boora.

Back in 1997, the Kilcormac Development Association (KDA), along with Bord na Móna, developed Loch an Dochas. Since then, this beautiful lake has been hosting the All Ireland Angling Competitions for disabled people every year in May. It brings people from all over the country to Lough Boora and something the Kilcormac Development Association are very proud of.

Initiatives within our community which have come specifically on the back of Lough Boora Discovery Park are the Lough Boora Running Club which meets every Wednesday and Sunday, the Kilcormac Walking Club who meet every Tuesday and Thursday in Lough Boora and have held part of our Walking Festival in October in the Discovery Park for the past 4 years.

Volunteers from the local community give their time to help at events held in Lough Boora, most recently the Halloween event where they help with parking, stewarding and are able to bring local knowledge to the visitors from other areas.

Our schools have used the Discovery Park on numerous occasions, again most recently during the Kilcormac Community Childcare Summer Camp and our local scouting group use the facility regularly and are currently working on a project with Ferbane Scouts to house a scouting den in Lough Boora Discovery Park.

The older people in our community meet regularly for walks and coffee mornings in Lough Boora and this is an essential part of combating rural isolation.

Without Bord na Móna and Lough Boora Discovery Park, the community of Kilcormac would not have the same quality of life, activities and economic opportunities which this project has brought to our area.
