Science Student of the Year

Pat O’Leary, Patrician Secondary School, Newbridge

Patrician Secondary School Newbridge has a long tradition of high academic achievers many of whom go on to study the STEM subjects at third level. Since 1995 Bord na Móna have generously sponsored our Science Student of the Year Award. It is a Cavan Crystal Trophy along with a bursary to cover the cost of textbooks in the first year of college and is awarded to the outstanding 6th Year student in the area of science.

Our 2015 winner, Padraig Stapleton, has also been awarded the Naughton Foundation Scholarship for County Kildare. This reflects the high standards achieved in the school and are encouraged by support from companies like Bord na Móna.

The vast majority of our winners have gone on to study science related areas and have pursued careers in this area. It is noticeable that three brothers Kevin, Owen and Joe Byrne were all winners. Their father Pat is a former employee of Bord na Móna. Our 1999 winner Shane Bergin is now lecturing Physics in Trinity College.

The school community are very appreciative of the contribution of such an internationally acclaimed company such as Bord na Móna. It is an enterprise that has supported the local community for many years. We are proud of their support and we commit to continue to pursue standards of excellence in the years ahead.
