The announcement that in 2030 we will complete our transition from harvesting peat for power generation into new sustainable businesses is an historic one for Bord na Móna

The task of reorienting Bord na Móna from being almost completely focused on peat used for power generation into other business areas has been ongoing for some time. Our target to cease harvesting peat for power by 2030 is a clear destination point in our journey to sustainability. We will continue to produce energy, but it will be through biomass, solar, landfill gas, wind, and waste to energy.

These sustainable businesses will continue to utilise one of our biggest assets, our land bank. This asset will continue to deliver benefits for the company, local communities, and the country at large.

Reducing Our Carbon Footprint

Our target is to have a 75 percent reduction in carbon emissions by 2030, based on 2015 levels. The transition to cease harvesting peat for power generation by 2030 will result in a significant reduction in Bord na Móna’s carbon footprint. Already, increasing use of biomass in co-firing has made an impact.

The amount of carbon dioxide we produce has also been reduced with the increased renewable energy production from the company’s wind farms. Solar energy is also being explored by Bord na Móna, with the deployment of a solar resource assessment station at Ballykean bog and a pilot 5MW solar farm being planned for 2016.

Another way that we are reducing our carbon footprint is through a range of initiatives designed to improve the company’s energy performance. These include ‘Step Up’, a sustainability and energy efficiency that encourages employees to help the environment by changing behaviours e.g. printing less, turning off lights and recycling more.

Other energy efficiency measures include route optimisation for our transport fleet, a Driving for Work initiative that helps improve fuel efficiency, a Peat staff energy efficiency campaign and improved energy efficiency in our buildings.
