Strategy and Regulatory Affairs Manager
Our Renewable Energy Business Unit currently has a need for a Strategy and Regulatory Affairs Manager on a permanent basis. The role will be based in Newbridge and will report to the Commercial Manager. The vision for Bord na Móna Renewable Energy is to become a leading provider renewable energy along with supporting flexible technology as we move towards a net-zero electric power system. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the Renewable Energy business statutory and market consultations and obligations and ensure full compliance with all regulatory obligations in the energy markets.
The main duties and responsibilities of the role will include the following:
- Lead and monitor the risk management process for the business unit and develop the strategy review process for the Business Unit. Play a pro-active role in liaising with and relationship with key regulatory and strategic stakeholders, including trade associations. As a member of the wider management team in the Renewable Energy BU, provide leadership and contribute to the achievement of the goals of the Business Unit;
- Assist and play a pro-active role as part of the wider Renewable Energy management team in the development and implementation of the Business Unit strategy. Develop and manage the annual strategy review process in conjunction with senior management. Review and collate key in-puts into strategy formulation, such as wider market and sectoral developments at both a National and European level. Ensure ongoing monitoring of key developments which should influence strategy;
- Ensure full compliance with statutory and regulatory approvals, authorisations, permissions and licences which are pre-requisites to participation in the broader electricity market in Ireland – while doing so in a manner which maximises Renewable Energy’s commercial interests. Seek wider funding opportunities for R&D projects across a range of emerging technologies which may ultimately contribute to the wider Renewable Energy asset base;
- Lead, manage and actively champion the risk process for the Renewable Energy Business Unit, ensuring the Senior Management team are constantly appraised of key risks and control/mitigation measures across the entire business. Liaise with the Group Risk Manager to ensure compliance with corporate Risk Management policy;
- Manage, develop and advance relationships with key stakeholders in the regulatory and commercial sphere including but not limited to the CRU, UREGNI, SEMC, DCENR, DETI, Eirgrid, DECC, EPA, DEFRA, OFGEM, WEI, EAI, IBEC, JBC, EurElectric and other NGOs – including the preparation and submission of position papers and formal responses to consultations. Play a lead role in engagement with our trade association bodies such as WEI & EAI in particular;
- Regularly assess and report on market trends and regional energy markets. Track, assess and influence, where possible, the evolution of the electricity market and the wider decarbonisation agenda. Contribute to the development of Renewable Energy portfolio of Generating Units – and as a member of the wider commercial team in the BU contribute to the identification of pathways and strategies to maximise market revenues;
- Represent Renewable Energy and the wider Bord na Móna Group with external regulatory stakeholders in the development of the Renewable Energy business and the implementation of its strategy. Ensure that the Renewable Energy Business unit is actively involved in and influences the formulation of renewable energy policy and development of regulatory processes and controls that facilitate renewable energy deployment in the Irish market. Leading the response to key policy and regulatory consultations will be a key focus;
- All employees are expected to co-operate fully with all provisions taken by the company for ensuring Health and Safety, and Welfare of co-employees and members of the public using the premises;
- As a key member of the wider Management team in the BU, proactively use the Performance Management process as a means to support resource planning within your team and the wider organisation;
- Proactively participate in the Performance Management process to ensure delivery of own, and the wider team’s objectives.
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualification, skills, knowledge and attributes:
- BSc Degree in engineering or related technical discipline;
- Minimum 7 years’ experience in a similar role;
- Significant experience in the Energy sector and regulation;
- Familiar with national and European regulatory frameworks in the Energy sector;
- An understanding of the technical and commercials of the renewable energy business;
- Excellent communication skills are essential for the role.
