Bord na Móna established Ireland’s first commercial wind farm on the cutaway blanket bog at Bellacorick, Co. Mayo in 1992. Operations began in Bellacorick in the early 1950s. Over the next six decades Bord na Móna employed thousands of workers – harvesting peat and supplying it to the local ESB power station at Bellacorick. As the land is remote, virtually uninhabited blanket bogland used for milled peat production, it was an ideal location for the wind farm. Belleacorick has long since been identified as perhaps the best wind farm site in Ireland.
