The final of the Liam O’ Connell schools debate took place in the Council Chambers of Aras Cill Dara in Naas on the 13th February 2017. The event was organised by Kildare Councillor Suzanne Doyle and sponsored by Bord na Móna.
10 schools took part in the event Holy Family, PBS (Newbridge), Newbridge College (2 teams), Clongowes, CPC (Kilcullen), Rathangan Post Primary, CBS (Naas), Colaiste (Naas) and Athy Post Primary.
The motion put forward for the day was “The goals of democracy and capitalism are not compatible”, There was a very high standard with the participants putting forward very robust and articulate arguments for and against the motion. Eamon Ryan, TD was the chair.
The Holy Family were the winning team, holding on to the title from the previous year. Jack Murray of PBS Newbridge was the winner of outstanding speaker managing to engage those in attendance with his knowledge and humour.
Each participant was also given a book to acknowledge their participation.
Bord na Móna have been sponsors of the debate for the last three years.
