Export Project: Press Statement

Bord na Móna has been developing its Clean Energy Hub project in the midlands with the focus on an emerging opportunity to export wind energy to Britain that would assist the UK in meeting its 2020 renewable energy targets.

In the absence of an Inter Governmental Agreement between the Irish and British Governments, as required under EU Directive 2009/28/EC, which would facilitate the export of surplus green energy, Bord na Móna will not now continue to develop the project as envisaged at this point in time.

The company has been involved in wind energy development in Ireland for over 20 years and given its substantial land bank of cutaway peatlands, Bord na Móna has a pipeline of wind energy projects under development for the domestic market. The company will continue with its programme of project development for these domestic projects to assist Ireland in meeting its future renewable energy targets, in support of national energy policy.
