Oweninny Wind Farm is located in North Mayo, west of Crossmolina and east of Bangor Erris. The wind farm is a 50:50 joint venture between ESB and Bord na Móna. In June 2016, An Bord Pleanála granted planning permission for the development of Oweninny Wind Farm consisting of 61 wind turbines. Oweninny Wind Farm is being built over two phases. When complete, it will have an installed generating capacity of 172MW.
Phase 1 of the Oweninny Wind Farm successfully entered operation in mid-2019 and is currently the largest operational wind farm across both the Bord na Móna and ESB generation portfolios. Phase-1 of the wind farm consists of 29 wind turbines provided by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. Presently, the wind farm has an installed generating capacity of 89MW.
The final piece of the project is a €3 million visitor centre. The construction of the bespoke Oweninny Visitor Centre is currently ongoing. The centre will act as an information hub for renewable energy along with showcasing the rich heritage in the region of both ESB and Bord na Móna over many decades.
Oweninny Wind Farm forms part of the solution for the government’s renewable energy targets of 70% renewable electricity by 2030.
