Energy

Bord na Móna has a new mission

Our new Energy business unit will be responsible for the management of our energy supply operations such as wind-farms, solar-farms, biomass co-firing and peat operations. It also incorporates our Horticulture business. Its operations include three wind-farms: Mountlucas, Bruckana and Bellacorick. Additional wind-farms are also planned to come onstream in the next number of years.

Energy is committed to building a national biomass industry. This renewable supply of biomass will provide the national grid with dispatchable green energy to support wind-farm and solar generator energy supply.

Leading Decarbonisation

Our Brown to Green strategy delivers on national and EU decarbonisation policies. This will drive significant reductions in peat-milling volumes and revenues in the coming years (peat harvested in the coming year to fall by nearly 70% from a recent high in 2013). There will be an increased sourcing of sustainable domestic biomass as the end of peat harvesting for power is accelerated.

Powergen Operations

Our Powergen Operations division will continue to manage our wind farms, biomass and bioenergy portfolio. With greater than 50% of our electricity generated now classified as carbon neutral, we are continuing our ambition of ever-increasing supply of renewable and sustainable energy to the Irish market.

Biomass

Biomass is a clean, reliable source of carbon-neutral renewable energy. Our source of solid biomass is derived from forest residues and sustainable energy crops. New technology means biomass can now meet many of the energy needs of Irish people. Bord na Móna is using biomass in different ways to power and heat homes, communities and businesses.

Fuels

Bord na Móna Fuels will continue providing warmth to over a million people in increasingly sustainable ways. We provide a wide range of fuel products including the iconic peat briquette.

Peat Operations

Bord Na Móna is synonymous with peat harvesting and much of your history centres around the harnessing of this resource for the nation’s energy purposes. Peat operations will continue but as Bord na Móna continues on its transition to renewable and sustainable energy technology, peat production will be bought to a close by 2027.
