Bord na Móna’s Edenderry Power Plant currently generates electricity by co-firing with a typical energy mix of 60% peat and 40% biomass. The carbon emissions associated with each unit of electricity generated in Edenderry is comparable with those from gas-powered electricity generation*.

The importance of peat to the local economy

In 2015, at peak, Peat employed a workforce of over 1,200 whose wages are spent in the local economy. Separately, in the last financial year the Peat business spent over €30 million purchasing goods & services in the local economy. This is just one way Bord na Móna helps to support Midland communities.

Responsibly Produced Peat

Our Peat business is committed to the responsible production of peat. All of our peat production activities are regulated by 9 IPC* licences issued by the Environmental protection Agency (EPA). Bord na Mona Peat is certified to the ISO 9001 quality standard and the energy management standard ISO 5000.

Peat activities are also governed by an archaeological protocol agreed with The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the National Museum of Ireland.

Bog Rehabilitation

Existing production bogs, which have been in development and production for up to 40 years, will be rehabilitated when they reach the end of their production life. By 2028 all harvesting of energy peat will cease.

Bog Restoration

In the mid-1980s Bord na Móna began draining a number of bogs in Galway and Roscommon for future energy production. Our transition to co-firing and the displacement of peat with biomass means that none of these bogs will now be brought into energy peat production. Because they have never been in production, unlike our existing production bogs which have been in production for up to 40 years, these bogs are sufficiently unaltered to be capable of restoration.

Bog Conservation

Bord na Móna has committed that it will not drain or open any additional bogs or peatlands. Since 1970, Bord na Móna has been contributing to the conservation of significant raised bogs and fen habitat. That year, a decision was made to purchase part of Pollardstown Fen, Co. Kildare and Raheenmore Bog, Co. Offaly as its contribution to European Conservation Year. These sites were eventually donated to the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
