A History of Innovation

An innovative drive has long been established in Bord na Móna and was reinvigorated with the opening of the Bord na Móna Innovation Centre. We continue to innovate and aspire to transform with the same success seen from our establishment in 1934.

Pamela has been part of the Innovation team since 2009 following completion of her Ph.D. in Environmental Waste Management Solutions. Among many things, Pamela is responsible for external engagement with stakeholders in line with our open innovation model and all Research & Development activities with a focus on the European Horizon 2020 platform.

This innovative approach to the removal of sulphur containing materials in extracted landfill gas has the potential to change the pre-treatment of landfill gas from commercially unviable to viable. Until this point, the solutions to landfill gas pre-treatment have been very expensive and therefore commercially unviable.

Preview of our Biomass growing trials

The aim of the project is to both establish new crops and harvest existing biomass crops on Bord na Móna’s cutaway peatland in order to determine their suitability for various end uses. Initial growing trials are focusing on grassy crops, including Italian Rye Grass, Reed Canary Grass, Soft Rush, and Reeds.
